It has been our experience that trying to save 200usd on new boot purchase vs. rental when you have already invested thousands of USD's on your trip may be a penny-wise pound-foolish approach. Drop us a note about gear you wish to rent and we will do our best to help you make the best decision on how to spend your hard-earned money wisely!
Depending on where you are traveling, there is a wide variety of decent quality climbing equipment for hire. Kathmandu, Quito, Huaraz & Mendoza offer excellent selections while Islamabad & Skardu in Pakistan offer very few rental opportunities.
Knock-offs and Counterfeit Clothing and Gear
Please be aware that there are knockoffs for clothing and accessories which are not actual North Face or MSR etc but which are perfectly good for a trip or two. There are some excellent local brands in Nepal, Argentina, Ecuador etc and we can recommend many of them for having very high standards.
More problematic is that there are now identical counterfeits of climbing gear and using a poorly made knockoff of a belay device or ascender can be potentially a fatal choice. We would encourage you to be very thoughtful about purchasing your crucial gear (biners, belay devices, accessory cord etc) if you decide to do so in a non-authorized shop. When in doubt check with the FTA staff or your guide for assistance on such purchases.
